Welcome!
Dear Friends and Colleagues at the University of California:

You are cordially invited to attend the 4th UC System-wide Bioengineering Symposium to be held on the UCSD campus on June 22-23, 2003. This Symposium has become a wonderful tradition after outstanding meetings at UC Davis 2000, UC Santa Barbara 2001, and UC Berkeley 2002. The purpose of the symposium is to foster exchange and discussions on bioengineering research performed on the campuses of the University of California. Bioengineering at the University of California has strong representation in many different areas and offers almost limitless opportunities for new interactions. This meeting is designed to foster these interactions. Please join us at this very meaningful and valuable event.

The Symposium will take place in the newly completed Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall and in adjacent lecture halls on the UCSD campus. The Symposium website now has a preliminary program. In the morning of June 22, after opening remarks, we will have plenary lectures by Dr. Robert Full of UC Berkeley and Dr. Roger Tsien of UCSD, as well as one minisymposium. From 12 to 2 pm on both days, we will have lunch and viewing of posters, which will be up all day. Other minisymposia will take place in the afternoon of June 22 and in the morning and afternoon of June 23. As was done in the past, the minisymposia will be composed by taking abstracts submitted for the System-wide Symposium. The program will be structured to provide ample time for informal discussions and maximal opportunities for interactions among participants. A banquet will be held in the evening of June 22.

The deadline for electronic submission of abstracts (for poster and oral presentations) and registration for the Symposium has been extended to Friday, May 9, 2003 at 5 PM (PST).

Forms for registration, abstract submission, and instructions for housing reservation and travel are posted on this Website. There you can find a map with driving directions to UCSD. Housing for the Symposium will be primarily in dormitories/apartments on campus. Rooms will also be available in hotels within walking distance to the campus. Students are especially welcome to attend this Symposium and energize the bioengineering activities on all campuses in the UC system.

With best regards,

Shu Chien (Chairman)
Geert W. Schmid-Schonbein (Chair of Program Committee)
